A journey against the tide

Ever since D’orica was founded back in 1989,
Giampietro Zonta and Daniela Raccanello have approached the world of goldsmith’s art with the desire to create
a totally sustainable business.

Their ethical vision, based on respect for both people and the environment, has embraced a commitment to ensuring a shared wellbeing for society. This has proved an atypical and difficult journey, where decisions that go against the grain, such as organising a completely internal supply chain, have ultimately led to huge gratification and praise.

Their son Federico Zonta grew up with these values and is now following in their footsteps, continuing what to all intents and purposes is a heretical journey that few are able to make.

Pioneers of sustainability, we have sought to be better for the world for over thirty years

Everything we do has an impact on the planet and on the people who call it “home”.

The author Jacopo Fo tells us about D’orica’s focus on the environment and how it has become a reference point as a sustainable business, contributing to a new paradigm of responsible progress, which has become more urgent than ever today.

D’orica is committed to ensuring that the gold it uses is of certified and traceable origin, guaranteeing that it does not derive from the exploitation of people and resources. D’orica uses energy from renewable sources and has progressively reduced its CO2 emissions over time. It uses biodegradable and recyclable materials and is working hard to reduce its plastic consumption. To all these conscious decisions we can add its efforts to raise awareness about recycling and saving water among those it works.

since February 2019.

D’orica is the world’s first B Corp to make jewellery on an industrial scale. We achieved certification in 2019, demonstrating our daily commitment to focusing on the social and environmental impacts of our business.

By becoming a B Corp, D’orica has joined forces with all the other certified companies of different backgrounds, sectors and sizes. Together we are redefining business structures on a global level: a positive force for people, our communities and the planet.

Furthermore, D’orica has become a benefit corporation in 2018. We have also amended our articles of association to reiterate on a judicial level that the scope of our business goes beyond mere profit and always scrupulously respects our founding values.

for a
(heretically ) ethical society

We need a new society founded on reinvented individuals. In order to be on a level with other periods of the past and learn how humanity can evolve with dignity, we must start over from the foundations: we must focus on facts in order to succeed in expressing sound opinions, we must commit to the people around us in order to build healthy relationships, we must learn how to live in this world in peace. We must educate ourselves in social coexistence.
This is the only path towards happy workers, ethical companies and an economy that works for us rather than the other way round. This civil revolution must stem from every one of us doing our best and working hard at what we do.

We need to rediscover and make use of our manual abilities. We also need to harness our critical thought, since a conscience well versed in freedom rids itself of prejudice. We firmly believe that education should be everybody’s concern, especially when schools and families struggle to fulfil their traditional duties. All of us – citizens, institutions, authorities and for-profit organisations – are collectively responsible. Because profit is not about accumulation as an end unto itself and is not associated with exploitation or illegality: instead profit is the fair income made by entrepreneurs who set out to improve the world, starting with their immediate surroundings. Today, more than ever before, we must unite people who are ready to promote solid initiatives and share the same philosophy; people who believe that each and every individual is unique, that work is a form of personal fulfilment attained via the benefit it creates for others and that there is no such thing as a degrading profession, only degraded relationships.

This community of people, aware of the need for a heretically new approach and of acts of courage, must feel it is their duty to spread a modern notion of civic education, a set of unwritten principles that we can all adopt to promote each other’s interests. These principles comprise: profound respect for diversity, preservation of the res publica (the common good), doing away with arrogance and spitefulness, staying true to one’s word, common sense, acting according to what is right and not what is advantageous, love of beauty, and kindness.

Let’s start over, right here and now, in our quest for a new #HereticallyEthicalSociety.

We involve local suppliers in our journey to foster a sense of belonging and increase interaction between organisations close to us

Establishing solid and transparent relations with local suppliers has enabled us to develop the economy and the local area. We have always upheld the importance of keeping the production chain in Italy to preserve the experience, expertise and peace of mind of those we work with. Contributing to our country’s growth does not mean looking purely to profit, but also educating the new generations in an ethical approach based on respect for people and the environment.

This is why we work with various local schools, introducing young students to tangible examples of corporate culture. We want to create a real link between education and business, a dialogue that explores both artistic and social/environmental issues.

Business as a benefit to society

Ever since D’orica was founded, all its decisions have been made to enhance and improve the lives of those who work with us. Being a B Corp-certified benefit corporation means thinking and acting on the basis of the idea that the business is a service to society, where profit objectives merge with aims for the common good.

Our company headquarters was founded no more than 20 km away from the homes of our collaborators in order to reduce commuting times and cut CO2 emissions. Our working hours have also been organised to ensure that our staff have time for themselves and their families: we start work at 7:45 a.m. and finish at 3:45 p.m., a solution that offers a great work-life balance. Always aware of the need to promote living with a low environmental impact, D’orica also makes
e-bikes available to all its employees free of charge.

Developing ideas is what

The wellbeing of our employees has always been at the heart of every corporate initiative. This is why D’orica has implemented a series of reward incentives that operate on several levels: financial, educational and job-related. The aim is to ensure our employees have everything they need to express their talent to the best of their ability on a daily basis.

We place particular emphasis on tidiness and cleanliness in the offices and workshop area. The entire building is fitted with a filter system that ensures constant air exchange and healthy working conditions as a result. We have also installed acoustic insulation systems in the machinery and sound-absorbing panels to reduce noise levels further still, taking them to well below maximum permitted levels. Thanks to these and other measures, D’orica guarantees a comfortable environment, where its staff can work in peace, fostering good working relationships, teamwork and personal achievement.
